There are a few Udemy instructors that make a significant passive income each month from their Udemy courses. At the other end of the scale there are Udemy instructors that make nothing from their courses. Too many Udemy instructors make the same mistakes and you can avoid these by following the advice in this article.

1. Not doing enough Research

Just because you are an expert in a particular subject does not mean that your course will be a success on Udemy. If there is no demand for your course then you will not make a cent from it. With a small amount of demand you could make a little bit of money but this will not compensate you properly for your efforts creating the course.
You must check that there is demand for your course before you spend any time creating it. There are a number of tools available to help you to do this and some of the best ones are free. Udemy Insights will tell you if there is student demand for your course just by entering a related keyword term for example.
You can also learn about the competition for your course using Udemy Insights. Some Udemy instructors are put off by competition but this is really a good thing. It shows that there is demand for training on the subject. You can always create a better course or go for a different angle.

2. Not creating and Engaging Course

There are a lot of courses in Udemy that fail because they do not provide engaging content to their students. Some instructors literally think that they are in a classroom full of kids decades ago and deliver their content in a very dull and boring way.
The most important thing to bear in mind when you are creating a Udemy course is student engagement. Be passionate about your subject and interact with your students as much as possible. Inject humor and fun into your lessons and tell your students that they are doing very well.
Provide your students with the answers they are looking for. You can find this out by doing the right research before you create your course. Look at the comments left for competing courses on Udemy and see if there are any unanswered questions that you can answer.

3. Not using the marketing potential of the course Landing Page

You can create the best course ever but if you can’t sell it then you will have just wasted a lot of time and effort. Udemy provides a landing page with all of their courses and very few Udemy instructors take advantage of this. They treat it as a chore and create a very boring and uninspiring landing page.
Your Udemy landing page is your chance to sell your course. Look at it as an advertisement for your course. You need to create the highest converting landing page that you can by telling potential students how they will benefit from purchasing your course.
Your title and subtitle really need to grab the visitor’s attention.

You need to create a short inspiring promo video where you explain all of the benefits of your course. Make the student goals action orientated. People purchase Udemy courses for the results. Explain what the student will be able to achieve at each step.
Then there is the course description. Don’t just add a logical and boring description. Make it benefit laden so the potential student can see why they need to purchase your course. And finally add an inspiring image to your landing page.
